Part 10

It wasn't until I got up the next morning that I realized what time I had finally gone to bed the night before. My phone awoke me from a few-hours sleep. I groggily pulled my massive blanket from over my head, letting the sunlight invade my sanctuary of warmth and darkness. I hit a key to dismiss the alarm and tried to gain a few more precious minutes of sleep. It didn't work. I hit a button at the top of my phone and stared at the small screen on the outside of the top half of the device. The LCD read 9:45 a.m. I had only managed to get a mere 4.5 hours of needed sleep.

I groaned and sat up in bed before throwing on fresh clothes and heading downstairs to the main floor. I sat down at the kitchen table and poured myself a bowl of my favorite cereal, Raisin Bran. Most people probably thought it was weird that I liked the stuff, but I didn't really care. I finished the bowl and washed it out in the sink before calling up my cousin to see if she would take me to church that morning.

I called her and she said that she and her kids would be there around 10:30. I figured they had just gotten up. I told her that would be fine, that I'd see her then and hung up the phone. To be completely honest, she wasn't my cousin exactly. She was my second cousin. I guess I've just been used to calling her my cousin. I knew she'd probably be at the house closer to 11:00. It usually took her longer to get here than when she said she would. It didn't bother me too much.

I finished getting ready and threw my shoes on before heading outside. I walked around the house and sat down on the front steps before hitting the spring-loaded release on the phone and burning up about 20 minutes by playing game demos that had been preloaded onto the phone. I played the demo version of the World Poker Tour game probably 10 times. Most of them I lost, and when I did win it was purely through luck and insane bluffing. I didn't know the first thing about Poker. I'd never played it in my life.

A green Dodge Grand Caravan from the early 2000s pulled up into the shared drive and I walked over as the mechanism inside the vehicle whining as it slowly pulled the door open and then pushed it closed as I sat in the seat and buckled up. My cousin, Rebecca McCoy was somewhere in her 40s or 50s, I wasn't sure. She had salt and pepper hair. She was somewhat heavy-set, and unlike my Midwestern accent, hers was straight out of Kentucky where I figured she'd spent a lot of her life.

I said hi to my two cousins. One of them, Kenny was sitting in the back seat. He was a pretty chill kid at 13. His sister Johanna was a year older than me. They both shared the same brown hair and greenish hazel eyes despite being 6 years apart in age. I liked hanging out with them a lot.

I listened to Kenny talk about a game that he had been playing recently on his PC with a group of friends online. I found it pretty interesting honestly. It was better than just hanging out at my house. But I guess not doing anything fun was my choice. I just hung out and read the few books and magazines I had laying on the bookshelf in my room, sometimes several times over in a month. Thankfully, this turn of events with the team, racing and Danielle, I finally had something to keep me busy and away from sheer and utter boredom. Thank God.

The road to church was literally a straight shot. We drove about 15 minutes on the highway between the city of Holland and Zeeland. After we drove through a 4-way stop, we drove about another mile or so and stopped at a local McDonald's. Becca asked everyone in the car if they wanted anything and my cousins gave her their orders. When it was my turn, I asked for one thing and one thing only. A large Dr. Pepper.

With about 5 minutes of driving before we got to church, I basically inhaled the icy caffeinated beverage as those 23 individual flavors bubbled and fizzed on my tongue. The rest of the journey was through a patch of country between the two cities. The van rolled up and looped around the building in a U before settling into its normal spot.
The church was pretty small on the outside. It was washed in a weathered layer of cracked and peeling white paint. Stained-glass windows lined the left and right sides of the building. One large window rested directly above the doors. Another, sitting just a few feet above the larger window looked out at the road and the small fuel station across the street. And yet two more windows, both tall and skinny, one on each side, flanked the doors. A pair of bushes sat under each of the two windows flanking the door.

I hit the button inside the van, just behind the front passenger seat, jumping out of the van and into the warm June Sunday air. I made the short trip to the double doors and yanked on it before walking inside. I made my way up to the sanctuary where the service was held and walked up the wide set of about 10 maybe 15 steps and walked into the open doors of the sanctuary.
The service started with the usual 45 minutes of worship immediately followed by the 45 minute sermon. There wasn't really a service where I didn't feel like I was touched in some way. I was a singer in high school, and as such I tried to sing my all even though I felt like just another member of the small congregation.

I just didn't really feel like I fit in anywhere and church really wasn't that different. I didn't seem to fit anywhere in school either. I felt like the black sheep. I stuck like a sore thumb. At least with my friend and the team, I felt like I fit in even the slightest little bit. I just wanted to be accepted. I wanted to feel like I belonged somewhere, that's all.

After the service was over, my cousin and I walked around the church and talked, like we always did. The topic of conversation was usually centered around video and computer games my cousin played. I was heavily debating on whether or not I should tell him about what had happened to me just days ago now. I knew I could trust him with things like this, because I had told him so many things before that not many other people knew about me or that had happened to me.

I decided to tell him. “Cool.” He smiled and half shrugged. That was his response to a lot of things I told him. That's not to say that it was his only reaction, it was just one of the more common in his arsenal. I went into more detail about it and his face lit up a bit. His eyes widened in surprise and all the while I was grinning like a fool and couldn't stop laughing from excitement. Being around cars and racing has been a dream of mine since I was about 14 and had started leafing through car magazines that were almost 5 years old then.

Some of my friends at school thought that this interest I had in cars was normal, at least for me. Others were of the more extreme opinion that it was an obsession. Sometimes I wondered if my cousin was of the latter opinion. It didn't take but a minute or so to do a full lap around the building at a walking pace. I lost count of the laps as we talked and before long his mom was hollering at us to get in the van. The ride home was pretty much the same as the ride there. I listened to my cousin talk and gave my own opinions every once in a while.

I walked in the door about 20 minutes later and flipped on the TV almost immediately. Sitting on the couch, I shed my shoes and started flipping through the channels. A rerun of an old episode of American Chopper was on. I watched the old show for a few hours before I heard the familiar sound of a big diesel Chevy towing a 27 foot boat pull up the road. I shut the TV off and headed upstairs to go read a book or something.

I walked into my room and made the very short trip of less than 10 steps to my bed and rolled onto my back, careful to avoid banging my head on the frame of the bunk above me. The ceiling in the room was pretty low, but I guess that's understandable, considering that I was on the second floor. I heard the back door open and my younger brother and sister were talking about something as they walked in. I pulled out a magazine from the bookshelf that also sheltered a stereo/CD combo and laid on my side with my back to the half-open door and flipped through the articles. I read an article about a woman whose husband built her a 1967 Plymouth GTX paying homage to a GTX she experienced in her childhood.
The story made me smile every time I read it.

After a while I began to grow restless. Instantly, Danielle popped into my head. I was tempted to ask if she wanted to hang out, but I wasn't sure if she had anything going on. I tried to distract myself a little bit longer. It didn't work. Temptation to call her finally got the better of me and I dialed the number she had given to me.

The phone rang three times, “Hello?”

“Hey Danielle, sorry to bother you. I was just wondering what you were up to and how you were doing.” I smiled nervously, thanking God that she couldn't see it. The thought later crossed my mind that she might be able to tell however, just through the tone of my voice.

“It's fine Alex, it's not a big deal. I'm just hanging out at home, not up to much. What about you? What are you up to?”

“Pretty much the same thing. I was just wondering how you were doing, figured I'd give you a call.”

“Oh okay.” The way she said it, the giggle in her voice made me wonder if she believed me.

“I get the feeling you don't believe me Danielle.” The sarcasm in my voice was laced with a laugh that I tried and failed to stifle.

“I just don't believe that you've had nothing on your mind until you called, that's all.” I could physically hear the smile playing on her lips.

I raised my eyebrows smiling and decided to play along. “Fair enough. What do you think has been on my mind this whole time then Danielle?”

“I don't know Alex, maybe I'll just leave you to think about it.”

I smirked and shook my head. “I know one thing that's been on my mind since it happened only just a few hours ago now.”

“Hmmm, and what might that be?” I could hear a playful tone in her voice so thick you could cut it with a knife.

“Well now, I'd have to say that it's something the both of us very much enjoyed doing together. That is of course, if I'm thinking about the same thing you are.”

“I would say that you and I are both thinking of the very same thing. And to say that I enjoyed it is an understatement. I loved it. It felt wonderful.”

I beamed and blushed hard on my end of the phone as I remembered exactly how the kiss felt. “Well, I'm glad to hear that because I was wondering something.”

“Oh yeah, and what might that be Mr Alexander?” I could sense her eyebrow being elevated as her questioning response left her lips.

“I was wondering if you wanted to hang out again this coming weekend, that is if you aren't too busy.”

“Hmmm, I don't know… I'll have to check my schedule. I'll call you if something comes up.” I heard the trill of my phone telling me that she had hung up on me. I took that as a yes. Women. They were very mysterious and yet also very interesting beings. At least, that's what I thought.

The next 5 days came and went without much going on. My sister and brother went to the church just a little way down the street, during the middle of the morning for a few hours, leaving me in the house virtually by myself. I passed the time with books and TV.
Finally Friday night showed up. Mom asked me if I wanted to go out on the boat with them or just stay home. I opted to just stay home. They were already in the process of loading up the boat again. She said okay and about 20 minutes later, I heard the truck pull out of the driveway and head for the boat launch at the nearby park. I was a little nervous about hiding the reason why I didn't want to go, but I really couldn't tell her what it was. For one thing, she'd never believe me. And two, if she did believe me, which I very highly doubt she would, well I don't know what she'd do to be completely honest.

I threw on my shoes and crutches and walked out and sat down on the front steps. I pulled out my phone and told Danielle that she could come and get me now if she wanted. I was all ready to go. After I hung up the phone, I jumped on the poker game and played a few rounds. I must have lost track of time, because what seemed like only a few minutes later, I heard the menacing throaty roar in the distance. I looked to my left, down what seemed like an endless stretch of road, and could see a bullet-on-wheels getting closer with each passing moment.

I got up and walked the few feet to the drive and made my way to where it met the edge of the street. She got there before I did and stopped in the middle of the road. I got in the car and buckled up. “Hey Danielle, what's up?” I smiled at her as the buckle clicked into the latch.

“Not much, got a call from this cute guy I know. He wanted to hang out and go racing tonight. What about you?” Her big smile flashed at me as her teasing words overflowed with sarcasm.

I chuckled and smiled like an idiot, trying to hide the blush of my cheeks. “Well that's a big coincidence, because I just called this beautiful girl up. I wanted to go hang out with her tonight. She's this amazing smile and a laugh that brightens my day. I can't forget that beautiful and pristine car that she drives. I absolutely love it. You should ask for a ride some time.”

She giggled, “This girl does sound pretty amazing. I wonder, do I know her?”

“I think you already do know her quite well actually.” I smiled, resting my hand on the center console.

“Maybe I do.” She blushed and touched my hand with hers.

My fingers found their way into the empty spaces between hers. I looked up and found her eyes locked on to me. I smiled and leaned in closer. She leaned in at the same time. Her quiet voice broke through the rumbling idle as the car sat. “Alex.”

“Yeah Danielle?” My heart started pounding like it had the last time I had been in the car with her.

“I've been thinking about what you said, about me deserving someone better than Matt…”

“Let me stop you right there Danielle.” I could feel my body physically shaking from the nervousness as she looked at me, waiting to hear my next words. “Would you be my girlfriend? I know that we've only known each other for a little while now, but I've already started falling for you…”

My words were cut off instantly as our lips met again, for the third time. My hand and fingers softly caressed her cheek, tracing the delicate line of her jaw. Her fingers gripped both of mine softly but firmly as we embraced. My head twisted to the side again and our mouths locked together.

Our lips pressed together, gently at first. I pushed harder, as I had done the time before. The harder we pressed, the more forcefully my heart threatened to beat its way from my chest. My eyes closed, I felt her hand leave my right cheek. I suddenly felt her fingers grip my hair tightly and push my head forward. I deepened the kiss more. I wanted to do something just then, but I didn't want to go too fast so soon.
“To heck with it. The worst thing that could happen is that she stops kissing you.” I thought to myself.

I was snapped back to reality as I heard her moan softly. I moaned back. My jaw opened up a little bit more. My tongue slid out and gently caressed her lips. I heard her moan again and felt her lips part. They tasted as sweet as before. The soft wetness of her tongue met mine and I moaned again, pressing my mouth into hers even harder.
As we kissed, my tongue slid across hers and explored warm wet interior of her mouth. I moaned again as our tongues played and danced as they swirled and twisted around each other. I pulled my tongue from her mouth and sucked on her lower lip. I could feel my heart banging off my ribs.

We finally separated after what seemed like an eternity. She smiled and I tried to find my breath. Words cannot express what I felt just then. It was intense. But even that can't describe the embrace. She blushed a darker shade of crimson now, and I could feel myself doing the same.

“Does that answer your question Alex?” She giggled in an almost whisper.

I looked into her warm brown eyes and nodded, “Yes Danielle. That told me everything I wanted to know.”

“Oh does it now? And exactly what did the kiss tell you?”

“It told me that you like me just as much as I suspected.” I smiled.

“Good, because I wanted you to know exactly how much I like you.”

My mind was on a high, a massive overload. I couldn't believe that I actually had a girlfriend, and one as amazing as Danielle. I felt like I'd explode from the sheer magnitude of the joy and elation I was experiencing.

“So, Danielle, did you want to go hang out at our special spot?”

“Sure, I'd love to.” She smiled at me as she stepped on the gas, turning left when she got to the corner and headed for downtown.
We drove South down the main street that mine branched off of mine. We traveled about 10 miles or so before we hit the highway. About 15 minutes later, I guessed, we were rolling down a stretch of dirt road before we stopped.

“We're here.” She said wearing her bright beautiful smile. I looked out at the small lake and smiled, it was beautiful no matter what the time of day.

“So, what do you want to do Danielle?” It was only about 7:30 in the afternoon, but it was still pretty well lit for now.

“Well, we could go swimming again.”

“We could. That would be a lot of fun. I could build another fire later and we could finish off the s’mores too.”

She nodded her head, smiling. I loved her smile, it was the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. Her face glowed as the sunlight shown through the windshield.
I unbuckled, opened the door and looked back at her, “What?” I couldn't help smiling at the way she was looking at me.

“I just love your smile and your eyes.”

“Oh yeah?” I blushed as I smiled at her.

“Yeah. I think you're very handsome Alex.”

“Thank you Danielle, you're very beautiful.”

“Thanks Alex, I like hearing that from you. It makes me feel good.”

“You're very welcome. I like it when you call me handsome, I can't help but smile when I hear you say that. I know you mean it, because you are a very honest person.”

“I'm glad you feel that way, and you're right, I wouldn't like to you about that.”

I touched her hand again and squeezed. I was the one to pull her into a slow smoldering kiss this time. After we pulled away, I could feel my cheeks start to cool down a bit. We got out of the car and I pulled off my shirt, revealing a pair of lanky thin arms, a flat smooth chest and nonexistent abs. I wasn't anything close to being the sexy built guy that girls fought each other to gain the attention of. I was thin, that was about the closest I'd get to being attractive, I figured. But something told me that she was different. Something told me that she'd rather have a skinny toothpick of a guy with an honest and faithful heart that wasn't the type to show himself off, rather than a ripped guy my age that was a complete jerk to women. I'm not saying that all guys are like that, but some fit that bill pretty well if not to a tee.

I threw the shirt in the front seat and met her at the driver's side front fender and leaned against it. I made sure not to scratch the paint as I rested my crutches against the steel. When she finished climbing out of the car in NASCAR fashion, she shed the white button-down she was wearing revealing the whole of her little black tank top. I kicked off my shoes and watched as she pulled off her beautiful brown boots. How did I get so lucky? I mean dang, I never thought I'd find a girl like her that actually liked me back. I never thought I was anything special. Yes, I'm smart and funny, but I have so many things that I wouldn't think she'd want to deal with. I just needed to shut up and be extremely grateful for the fact that she liked me as much as she did.

“Quit being so down on yourself Alex, seriously. There are millions of people a million times worse off than you. Besides, she'd still be with that prick if you hadn't stepped in and told him to back off.” I was the type of guy that over thought everything, talked to and had mental conversations with myself and talked to things no matter what they were. I talked to cars I raced in video games whenever I played, like they would ever actually listen to me, right? I also talked to Roxanne when I had built and when I raced her. Maybe I was weirder than I thought, I don't know.
All of these things were going through my head while Danielle stripped down to her top and jean shorts. I had also been debating heavily about taking my jeans off and just swimming around in my boxers, but I didn't like looking at my legs. My knees were always bent at about a 90 degree angle and I stood up on the balls and toes of my feet.

I shook my head to clear it of everything that was going and smiled at Danielle. I hadn't realized that she had been looking at me the whole time. She had a visible yet slight frown on her lips.

“What's wrong Alex? You seem upset about something.”

“It's nothing Danielle, I promise okay?”

“What's wrong Alex? Really.  Please tell me. I'm here for you.” Her soft warm brown eyes pleaded to me to tell her.

“Alright, well, I'm just really self-conscious about a lot of things. I don't want to make you sad.”

“It's okay Alex. I know how that feels.”

I looked at her wide-eyed and furrowed my brows a bit. “You do? Really?”

“Yeah, I'll tell you about it sometime. Just don't feel bad or ashamed or self-conscious because I like you just the way you are. Okay?”

“Okay.” I smiled brightly and took off for the shore of the small lake. “Race ya there.” I called back laughing.

“Hey, no fair Alex!!! That's cheating!!!” She giggled and hollered up at me as she hot-footed it to the bank, passing me just a few feet from the water's edge.

I dropped my crutches at the edge of the shore and did my best to go in after her. I had barely made it to waist-deep water before she came out of nowhere and pulled me under. My hands hit the muddy bottom and I pushed myself up before I could face-plant into it. I came back up trying to regain my breath. She popped up closer to the middle of the lake and I pushed off the bottom, taking off after her. I kicked my legs as hard as I could and tried to close the gap between us. She figured out what I was doing and tried to get away from me. I swam harder as I chased her like I had the first time we came here just days ago. She giggled and shrieked as I finally caught up to her.

I could feel the warmth of the sun radiating down on my back as I hugged her close, wrapping my arms around her waist.
The water slowly settled to a calm as the movement caused by our swimming and splashing stopped. She looked up at me with a warm smile on her face. I smiled back and brushed her hair behind her ear and out of her face.

“You know, that little patch of trees actually has a tire swing hung up in one of them.”

“Really? I haven't been on a tire swing in a while.” I smiled again.

“We can go check it out if you want to.”

“Sure.” My smile widened into an ear-to-ear grin.

She smiled at me and I took the opportunity to kiss her softly, our lips making contact for but an instant. She kissed me back and then wrapped her legs around my waist. I carried her until the water was below my waist. Because I had trouble keeping my balance then, she took my hand and helped me to the shore.

“Thanks for helping me.” I blushed, embarrassed that I needed help to walk up the shore.

“You're welcome Alex. I'm glad I could help you. I'd help you whenever you needed it, I promise.”

I picked up my crutches and walked with her over to the miniature forest of about 30 trees. They were a mix of big pines and a few other types of trees. Oaks and Maples were mixed in with the much taller Pine trees. Twigs and a carpet of shed needles and dry leaves rustled under our feet as we stepped. Birds chirped and flew over our heads. The golden rays of the sun cut through the trees as it sank lower into the sky. As we neared the middle of the small grove, a decently sized Maple held a tire suspended by a rope on one of its outstretched branches.

By the way the tread was cut into the rubber, thin lugs arranged in a V-shaped design, I figured the tire came off a tractor, or it could have been a mud tire that was modified. Either way, I smiled at the sight. If I could and had the money, I'd build a house out here. The scenery was amazing and there wasn't much of a chance that you'd run into much traffic, not this far out of the city.

“Do you live around here Danielle?”

“Yeah, my house is about a 15 minute drive from here actually.”

“Oh that's cool, you must love living out here huh? I know I would.” I smiled.

“Yeah, I know what you mean. It's so beautiful and peaceful out here. I want to live out in the country for the rest of my life.”

I looked back, my smile still beaming, and climbed up into the tire. Danielle had to help me get going a bit at the start, but after that, she went around the tree and started to climb. It wasn't long before she was high up in the branches. I smiled and continued to swing back and forth, laughing like a little kid.

“Why you climb on up here Alex, the view is beautiful.”

The offer was a nice gesture, but there was only one problem. “I'd love to join you Danielle, but I have a little trouble climbing. I've actually never really climbed a tree before. I'm also scared of heights.”

“Oh come on Alex, I think you can do it.”

“Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm good.”

She climbed down and over to my branch and straddled it as I swung. She moved closer and closer until she was right above the rope.

“What in God's name are you doing Danielle?”

“You'll see.” She smiled and giggled as she hoisted herself down off the branch, holding onto it with just her hands, grabbed ahold of the rope and slid down it before she landed on top of the tire.
“Are you enjoying the view from down there Mr Alexander?” She teased me, giggling, and I blushed bright red.

“I'm enjoying it alright. The only thing that would make it any better is if you were to come down here and sit in the swing with me.”

In truth, I was. I mean seriously, what guy wouldn't enjoy being on a tire swing out in the country with his girlfriend, even though I had quite literally just asked her out, and get a view of her beautifully tanned legs.
I smiled and blushed more, trying my best not to laugh. I wasn't expecting her to actually do it, but she gripped the tire with both hands and put her legs through the middle of the tire and wrapped them around my waist before sitting on my thighs as she straddled me. I smiled and ducked my head into the tire.

“What are you doing Mr?” She giggled and raised an eyebrow at me.

I ignored her question and gently kissed her neck. She moaned softly and I could see her eyes were wide from surprise. I was actually surprised a bit as well at my sudden brazenness. She seemed to enjoy it though by the look on her face and the fire flickering in her eyes. We kissed again as we swung back and forth, finally stopping as the swing began to slow. I looked out and through the miniature forest and saw the sun as it began to disappear beneath the horizon. It must have been around 9:00 or so. I jumped down from the swing and waited for her.

“Ya know, I was thinking about this earlier, but I'd love to build a house in this very area if I could.”

“That's pretty amazing, because I've wanted to do the exact same thing ever since my dad first brought me here as a child.”

I smiled and started walking back to her car, she walked with me and we just talked about the scenery of this little place and how beautiful it really was.
We made it back to her car, and I noticed the pile of wood that I left from the first time we'd been here. I arranged it into a teepee and went to the car to grab the lighter next to my wallet and other stuff from inside my wadded up t-shirt I had thrown back into the passenger seat.

I picked up the shirt and shook it, the lighter fell out and slid to the back of the seat where the bottom met the back. I picked the lighter up, tossed it into the air and caught it as it fell. It wasn't much of a show-off moment, but it made me smile.
I walked over to the wooden teepee and lit up the end of a stick before I laid it against the side of structure. I stepped back after I encircled the burning teepee with the rest wood.

I turned around as I heard the hollow thump of the door, and saw Danielle coming back with blanket and the plastic bag containing the remaining s’mores ingredients. I helped her lay out the blanket after she put it down, straightening it out, and unwrapped the bag. I pulled my hand away as my palm made contact with the prongs of one of the skewers. I shook my head and rolled my eyes, thinking how stupid it was of me to just dig into the bag without opening it up all the way. Danielle must have noticed my mini heart attack, because I heard her trying to stifle her snickering. I chuckled at it, but I still felt a little dumb for doing it.

I pulled out a marshmallow for each of us, put them each on a skewer, and handed one to Danielle before I started roasting mine. We sat next to each other, warming up by the fire and eating s’mores.

Before long, we finished eating a couple s’mores apiece and did away with the marshmallows altogether munching on the graham crackers and the little rectangles of chocolate by themselves. By the time we finished our sugar extravaganza, the sky was a mix of purples pinks and golds. She was laying out on top of me with her head on my chest as we watched the sun sink lower through the trees. I rested my hands on her middle. She turned her head and smiled up at me.

When the sun was almost down, we got up and I went to put the fire out. I heard the car fire up behind me and heard the radio get louder as she cranked up the Country station. She came back up to me smiling.

“Would you like to dance Danielle?” I smiled, a bit nervously.

“I thought you'd never ask cowboy.”

She placed her hand on my shoulder and we swayed back and forth as song after song played on the radio. I had my left hand on one crutch, to keep me steady, and my right hand on her hip. The longer we danced, the more relaxed I became, and the closer she got, until she was resting her head on my shoulder. I hadn't really ever danced with a girl before, other than when I danced with a cousin of mine who's a few years younger, at a wedding a few years ago. I hardly remember what happened that day actually, other than that.

The sun finally sank down until nothing remained but the rainbow of light in the sky. It soon disappeared, but we kept dancing. I kissed her cheek. She smiled, wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me back on the lips. The kiss grew into a slow smoldering embrace, just as it had been a few hours ago. The radio continued to play. Some of the songs were slow and meaningful, while others were upbeat and could be part of a jamming session. No matter the pace of the song though, our movements remained slow and fluid.

When we finally broke, the song of crickets chirping into the darkness of night had replaced the melody of birds and joined the symphony of Country music. I loved it. Whenever I played music like this, a night like this usually came to my mind.
The time we had spend together this evening hadn't felt like a few hours, it really felt like just a few minutes that we had spent together. We danced to a few more songs and held each other. I looked at her. That's all I wanted to do just then, nothing else, just look at her.

After those last few songs, I burned the sticky insides of the marshmallows from the skewers off on the hot coals, threw some dirt on the fire and cooled them off with a little water from the lake. I tossed all the empty wrappers into the plastic bag along with everything else while she folded up the blanket and put it under the back seat. It wasn't until I pocketed the lighter, my keys and wallet that I realized how dry my jeans had gotten just by sitting and dancing by the fire.

I put my shirt back on and buckled up as Danielle brought her car to life. The sound of the car cranking up and roaring to life brought chills up and down my spine every single time. She turned on the high beams and asked where I wanted to go.

“I'm feeling like I want to go racing tonight. You wanna hit the garage?”

She smiled. “Yeah, sure let's go.” The next thing I know, we were cruising down an old dirt road. It switched over to asphalt and she let the old girl free and opened the throttle up all the way. The glorious growl of the Challenger’s big-inch motor howled as it ran through 3 forward gears and settled down to about 2,500.

I smiled at her, laughing as she shifted through each gear, and by the way she looked at me she must have gotten an idea. She slowed down to about 20 miles an hour and downshifted the old automatic into second gear. She put her foot on the brakes, revved the motor and lifted partially off the fat pedal. The tires lit up and screamed, pouring smoke.

She played with the throttle and the brakes, keeping the tires lit. I couldn't help but smile wide. I looked back out my window, only able to see the ghostly red glow of the taillights trying to get through the thick white smoke. She upshifted back into 4th and left the scene behind us.

In a few minutes we rolled up to the garage. I got out of the car and made a beeline for my pretty Chevy in her cute little black dress wearing a beautiful shade of red lipstick on her lips. My buddy tried to say hey as I jumped in behind the wheel and fired my baby up. I cranked the window down and listened as Rj started talking.

“There's a race going on tonight and my cousin says a certain somebody is looking to get even tonight.”

“Count me in man.” I slammed the door and put her in drive.

“We were all just waiting on you man. If you and Danielle want to head out that way, we'll meet up with you there dude.”

“Sounds good man. See you there.” With no other words after that, I stepped on the gas and rolled up to the open bay door.

I looked over at Danielle and nodded my head toward the door. She smiled and nodded back. She turned her car around and we drove down the ramp and to the broken asphalt together. I grinned, threw the transmission into 2nd, held the brake pedal halfway down and laid the throttle to the floorboard. The tires chirped and squealed breaking loose and losing traction, they begged me to stop. I thought about their protesting for a moment and let up for half a second.

It didn't take but that little bit before I got back into it, listening to the 383 wind up. The Procharger sounded pretty happy as it whistled and whined. The little red needle climbed as the little small block revved up higher and higher before it started banging off the limiter. I finally let off, giving the poor girl a break. I looked off to my right and saw the deep-purple Dodge keeping with me.

We drove a few miles and it wasn't long before we saw the headlights of countless cars shining on a stretch of otherwise empty asphalt. We pulled up, parked at the end of a row of 60s Impalas, Chevelles, Chargers and other gorgeous examples of American Muscle. A few guys walked past, probably to go check out my baby. It made me smile big thinking that some of the guys appreciated my handiwork.

The celebration I was having ground to a halt as a familiar face stalked his way up to Danielle and I. “Well, this was gonna happen sooner or later.”, I looked over at Danielle as I said that.

“You've got this Alex.” She looked back at me with a warm confident smile.

We stopped walking and waited for the guy to come to us. He looked madder than a nest of hornets after they've been hit and kicked around by a 10 year old kid. He looked like he wanted to kill me. I thought I at least stood a little bit of a chance. I hoped so anyway.
